Auto insurance

Auto insurance in Florida, explained and compared.

What the state requires, what each coverage actually does, and how we find the right price for it across five carriers — in English or Spanish.

What Florida requires

Florida is a no-fault state. To register a car you need two coverages from a Florida-licensed insurer, and you must keep them active for the whole registration period — even if the car sits in the driveway.

CoverageFlorida minimumWhat it does
Personal Injury Protection (PIP)$10,000 — requiredPays 80% of your medical bills and 60% of lost wages after a crash, no matter who caused it. You must get treatment within 14 days.
Property Damage Liability (PDL)$10,000 — requiredPays for damage you cause to other people's cars and property.
Bodily Injury Liability (BI)Not required for most driversPays for injuries you cause to others. Required after certain violations (SR-22: $10,000/$20,000) and after a DUI (FR-44: $100,000/$300,000).
If your coverage lapses, FLHSMV can suspend your license and plate for up to three years, with no hardship license, and reinstatement fees run up to $500. Set up autopay and call us before a due date if money is tight — a payment plan change is cheaper than a suspension.

Every coverage in your policy

Required in Florida

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

Your own medical bills and lost wages after an accident, regardless of fault, up to $10,000. A $1,000 deductible lowers the price; so does limiting it to the named insured.

Required in Florida

Property Damage Liability

Damage you cause to someone else's car or property. $10,000 barely covers a fender-bender with a new SUV — we usually recommend $25,000 or more.

Bodily Injury Liability

Injuries you cause to other people. It is what protects your savings and wages if you are sued after a serious crash. Common limits: $25,000/$50,000, $50,000/$100,000, $100,000/$300,000.

Collision & Comprehensive

Repairs or replaces your own car: collision after an accident, comprehensive after theft, vandalism, hail, flood or a hurricane. Required by lenders on financed and leased cars.

Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist

Your injuries when the at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough — and in Florida that is one driver in five. Stacked UM covers every vehicle on your policy.

Extras that earn their keep

Rental reimbursement, roadside assistance, gap coverage for a financed car, medical payments, custom equipment. We add only what you will actually use.

Choosing your limits

The state minimum keeps you legal; it does not keep you protected. Three questions decide most policies:

  • What could you lose? Liability limits should cover what a lawsuit could reach — your savings, your home equity, your wages. More coverage is often cheaper than people expect because the risk of a very large claim is small.
  • Could you replace the car tomorrow? If not, carry collision and comprehensive. If the car is worth less than a few years of premium, consider dropping them and keeping liability high.
  • What deductible can you pay today? $500 and $1,000 are the usual choices; the higher one lowers your premium but is yours to pay after a claim.

What moves your price

Every carrier weighs these differently — which is exactly why comparing five of them matters:

  • Your ZIP code and where the car is parked overnight
  • Driving record, tickets and claims in the last 3–5 years
  • The vehicle: value, repair cost, theft rate, safety features
  • Coverage, limits and deductibles you choose
  • Continuous prior insurance — a lapse costs more than people think
  • Payment plan: paid in full, autopay and paperless usually earn discounts
  • Discounts that vary by carrier: multi-car, homeowner, good student, defensive-driving course, safe driver, low mileage

What you need for a quote

  • Driver's license for every driver in the house (foreign licenses welcome)
  • The VIN, or the year, make and model
  • Your current policy or declarations page, if you have one
  • Address where the car is kept and how it is used

After you buy

We send your ID cards and proof of insurance the same day. We remind you before every renewal, and when you need a change — a new car, a new driver, a new address — you call us, not a call center. Everything an existing client needs is on the customer service page.
